Environmental area

ATIC’s environmental area carries out research, tech transfer and development activities related to the protection of the environment, Wind Engineering, Green Engineering and Green Chemistry:

• Wind Engineering studies in the EESCLAT wind tunnel, with a variety of applications (in automation, aeronautics, architecture, public works, soil erosion, environmental studies, etc…)
• Life cycle’s analysis and assessment (LCA) and Carbon Footprint analysis
• Eco-design and industrial ecology
• Environmental analyses of products and processes
• Carbon foot print of products, processes and activities
• Environmental risk and impact analyses
• Support to environmental management systems
• Green Engineering and Green Chemistry
• Modeling and computing of environmental processes
• Bioremediation of polluted soils
• Transport models of pollutants in the environment
• Biodegradation for the decontamination of environmentally toxic compounds
• Evaluation of ecotoxic properties (toxicity, mutagenesis, etc.)
• Environmental expert appraising, counseling and consulting

ATIC uses infrastructures and equipment for the development of its projects, including labs equipped with the latest technologies and simulation software (CFX – CFD fluidinamic simulation; Hysius with process simulation and Predici for simulation).

Area manager: Dr. Francesc Castells

Dr. Castells is full professor in Chemical Engineering and director of the research group AGA (Environmental Analysis and Management) of the Departament d’Enginyeria Quimica of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili of Tarragona. He graduated in 1970 as a Chemical Engineer from the Institut Quimic de Sarria (Barcelona), and he received a Ph.D. in 1974 at the Institut du Genie Chimique of Tolouse (France). Since February 1974 he worked as a production technician at Industrias Quimicas Asociadas of Tarragona, until October 1976, when he joined the delegation at Tarragona of the Facultat de Quimica of the Universitat de Barcelona, as a professor. He currently teaches and conducts research in Environmental Engineering, specifically in the fields of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), environmental assessment of processes, regional sustainability models, and evaluation of environmental costs and damages.
